Tumpak Sewu in the morning, Bromo at sunrise, Ijen before dawn — then a ferry to Bali. Three days that cover the full east-west crossing of Java’s volcanic spine.
DAY 1 — Malang → Tumpak Sewu → Bromo
Depart Malang at 06:00. Two hours to the waterfall. Best light is between 06:00–10:00 before cloud closes in.
At Tumpak Sewu: a short walk to the panoramic viewpoint (drone permitted here), then 40 minutes down a rocky, often wet trail to the base. The descent is slippery — follow the guide. Allow 3–4 hours total at the waterfall. Water shoes or trekking sandals are non-negotiable.
Afternoon drive (approx. 4 hours) to the Bromo area. Overnight.
DAY 2 — Bromo Sunrise → Ijen Transfer
Wake-up at 03:00. Jeep to Kingkong Hill viewpoint (45 min). Sunrise around 05:30. After the light clears, descend to the Sea of Sand and walk 45 minutes to the crater rim — easy trail, clear path. The smell of sulphur is strong at the top.
Back to the hotel for breakfast. Then the long drive to Banyuwangi (approx. 6 hours). Overnight.
DAY 3 — Ijen Crater → Ketapang Harbour
Depart hotel at 02:00. One hour to Paltuding. Trek to the crater rim: 1.5–2 hours depending on pace. Gas masks provided. At the top: the turquoise acid lake and (conditions permitting) the blue fire.
Back to Banyuwangi for breakfast, then transfer to Ketapang Harbour by 11:00 for the ferry to Gilimanuk, Bali.
Optional: Blue Fire Tour — requires midnight departure. Subject to safety conditions at the gate.
